Top 10 Design Tips for a Luxurious Bathroom

Hello everyone, and welcome! Have you ever wondered how to transform your bathroom into a serene and stylish sanctuary? After the positive response we’ve received, I thought it was time to create another blog post about bathrooms, this time focusing on the top 10 design tips to make your bathroom as luxurious, practical, and beautiful as possible.

We’re diving deep into our portfolio, drawing from various projects to share the best ideas we’ve come across. These tips are designed to be useful and applicable, whether you’re renovating or just looking to refresh your space.

    1. Prioritise Storage

Storage is the cornerstone of any luxurious bathroom. Without sufficient and well-organised storage, even the most beautiful bathroom can feel cluttered and uninviting. My main advice is to maximise storage, especially around the vanity area, which tends to be the hub for all your essentials.

In one of our projects, we incorporated several storage solutions:

    • Hidden Mirror Cupboards: The mirrors above the vanity unit cleverly conceal cupboards. With a discreet handle, these mirrors open to reveal shelves perfect for storing small items like moisturisers, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. A shaving point is also tucked away inside, adding to the functionality.

    1. Cupboards and Drawers: Below the sinks, we’ve combined cupboards and drawers. The cupboard cleverly hides a bin. Drawers are perfect for towels, face cloths, and other everyday items you want to keep out of sight.

    • Open Niches: An open niche provides an opportunity to display rolled towels or decorative items.

To maximise surface area on the vanity unit, consider an under-mounted basin. This means the sink is fitted beneath the countertop, creating more space for displaying soaps, candles, or even a small mirror and an orchid. This is especially beneficial in smaller bathrooms where surface space is limited.

    2. Master the Art of Lighting

Lighting is crucial in any room, but especially so in a bathroom. It needs to be versatile, providing both task lighting for grooming and mood lighting for relaxation. The key is to incorporate multiple light sources to cater to different needs.

    Consider these lighting ideas:

    • Niche Illumination: If you have niches in your shower or bath area, adding an LED strip can highlight your products and act as a design feature.

    • Uplighting: Spotlights on the floor shining upwards can create drama and illuminate key features, such as a beautiful bath.

    • Indirect Lighting: Hidden LED strips in the ceiling can provide a soft, indirect glow.

    • Focused Spotlights: Spotlights can highlight artwork or architectural details, such as the pattern in book-matched marble.

In a smaller guest loo, strategic lighting can create depth and the illusion of more space. For example, a recessed wall above the vanity area can house an LED strip, creating a channel of light that mimics natural light and adds visual interest.

The impact of LED strips underneath the vanity can also draw the eye and balance the lighting.

    3. Elevate with Styling and Accessories

Even if you can’t renovate your bathroom, you can still make it feel more luxurious through styling and accessories.

    • Towels: High-quality towels can add a touch of elegance. Monogrammed towels can add a personal touch, bringing in colour and interest.

    • Art: Adding art, such as a framed photograph or a piece you’ve created yourself, can personalise the space and add visual interest. Consider prints, coral, or even sculptures.

    • Candles and Diffusers: These not only look beautiful but also make the space smell inviting. Candles are also a great alternative light source for relaxing baths.

    • Marble Trays: A marble tray is a versatile accessory for storing hand towels, products, or a candle. It’s a simple way to introduce a luxurious material without a complete overhaul.

    4. Incorporate Furniture

Adding furniture can make a bathroom feel more inviting and comfortable. A small table next to the bath is perfect for holding a candle and a vase. An armchair, if space allows, can create a sociable atmosphere.

Even a small wooden stool can serve as a table or a seat next to the bath, providing both functionality and style.

    5. Minimise Glass in the Shower Enclosure

Using too much glass in a shower enclosure can create a cleaning nightmare. A better solution is to incorporate a nib wall clad in marble, reducing the amount of glass and significantly cutting down on cleaning time.

The goal is to design a bathroom that not only looks good but also remains practical and visually appealing over time.

    6. Connect the Ensuite

When designing an ensuite bathroom, consider tying in the colour scheme with the adjacent bedroom. This creates a sense of cohesion and makes the space feel like a luxurious suite.

    This can be achieved through:

    • Stone Colour Choice: Select stone colours that complement the bedroom’s palette. For example, a dark marble can work well with a masculine bedroom.

    • Vanity Colour Choice: A coloured vanity can tie in with a child’s bedroom, adding a playful touch.

    • Paint Colour: A subtle paint colour on the walls can connect the two spaces.

    • Art Choices: Select art that complements the overall colour scheme.

    7. Invest in Quality Taps

Never skimp on taps. High-quality taps are essential because they are used daily. Investing in the best you can afford will save you money in the long run, avoiding costly replacements and labour.

    8. Conceal the Toilet

While a toilet is a necessity, it doesn’t need to be the focal point. There are several ways to conceal it:

    1. Separate Closet: A completely separate closet within the bathroom is ideal.

    • Vanity Unit Partition: Building a vanity unit on a floating wall can create a partition, tucking the toilet behind it on one side and the shower on the other. This design solves multiple problems by concealing the toilet and creating a glass-free shower area.

    9. Use Marble Strategically

Real marble is the epitome of luxury, but it can be expensive. Use it strategically to achieve a luxurious look without breaking the bank.

    • Combine Materials: Use marble for key features like the basin and a column, and then clad the rest of the walls in a more affordable wall covering.

    • Mix Stone Types: Use slab marble for the floor and vanity area, and then opt for more affordable stone tiles in the shower.

    • Mosaic Tiles: Use mosaic tiles to create a rug effect on the floor, which is both visually appealing and practical for children’s bathrooms due to its anti-slip properties.

    10. Control Light with Window Treatments

If you have a window in your bathroom, ensure you have appropriate window treatments to maintain privacy.

Sheer Roller Blind: This allows natural light to diffuse through the day.

    • Opaque Roman Blind: Combine this with a sheer blind to block out light completely and ensure privacy at night.

    Final Thoughts

Creating a luxurious bathroom is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about creating a space that is both beautiful and functional. By focusing on storage, lighting, accessories, and strategic material choices, you can transform your bathroom into a personal sanctuary.
